(Uniform structures of Banach spaces and extrapolation of Banach spectral gaps) 」

For a finite graph G, the first eigenvalue of the combinatorial Laplacian (unlike the last talk of the speaker, we set 0 as the 0-th eigenvalue) is denoted by lambda_1(G), and it is called the spectral gap in usual sense. The lambda_1(G) can be expressed in terms of the Rayleigh quotient. By generalizing that exoression, we can define for a Banach space X the spectral gap of G with target in X. Here we use square sum, and we can furthermore generalize this definition and define "the p-spectral gap of G with target in X", denoted by lambda(G;X,p), by considering p-sum. The exponent p is alway taken from [1,infty) in this talk. For instance, the lambda_1(G) in usual sense coincides with lambda(G;R,2), and with lambda(G;l^2,2) (where R denotes the field of real numbers).

With the aid of theory of spectral analysis, certain estimates of lambda_1(G) is available. In general, however, to make estimation of lambda(G;X,p) is rather a tough problem. From this background, the following two questions are raised:
(1) For a fixed p, make estimation of the behavior of lambda(G;X,p) in terms of X.
(2) For a fixed X, make estimation of the behavior of lambda(G;X,p) in terms of p.
In this talk, we shall give some answers to these questions in the case that X belongs to the following class:

"The unit sphere S(X) is bi-uniformly homeomorphic to the unit sphere S(l^2) of the infinite dimensional Hilbert space." (*)

This class (*) contains l^p and L^p spaces (more generally, noncommutative L^p spaces), and uniformly convex Banach spaces with unconditional basis. On question (1), we give quantitatively stronger version of the result of N. Ozawa that "expanders do not coarsely embed into any Banach space in class (*)." From this, we obtain that "finite graphs in a sequence of expanders realize the worst order on the distortion of embeddings into Banach spaces in class (*)", which can be regarded as a generalization of the result of J. Matousek for l^p spaces. Question (2) is in general harder than question (1), and a known case is where X=R. The concerning result is called the Matousek extrapolation. We have a generalized result for any X in class (*). This new extrapolation enables us, for instance, to estimate lambda(G;l^p,q) for diffrent p and q from the value lambda_1(G). On the proofs of these results, group theory (and rough representation theory) play an important role.
