To whom considering the application for the regular/research student in my laboratory

January 25, 2024

Because of my retirement in March 2026, I have stopped taking on the regular student now at Tohoku University.

Since many English and Japanese books for mathematical biology have been published, you would be able to find and see some of them in order to get the knowledge about mathematical biology, for example, in an appropriate library near you. Today it is easy to get some knowledge about it on the internet, too.

It is clearly undesirable for you to choose the next step of your study with your misunderstanding of the research field. I do recommend that you do your best to make the above-mentioned consideration about the research field and the choice of a candidate for your supervisor.

I do not accept the research student except for in the following two cases:
  1. As a scholar of a certain scholarship, it is supported by the scholarship for the scholar to have a preparatory period as a 'research student' before becoming the regular student;
  2. Coming to our university with a student/academic exchange program (e.g., internship) under an academic agreement between your university/department and ours, or with an official fund provided by the university to which you belong.

  1. As for the entrance examination of our graduate school, you can get satisfactory information from the following sites:

    1. https://www.is.tohoku.ac.jp/en/entrance/exam.html
    2. http://www.math.is.tohoku.ac.jp/english/admission/index.html
    3. https://www.tohoku.ac.jp/en/admissions/admission_graduate.html
    4. https://www.is.tohoku.ac.jp/introduction/ilo/index.html

    1. https://www.is.tohoku.ac.jp/jp/entrance/exam.html
    2. https://www.math.is.tohoku.ac.jp/index-j.html

  2. For satisfactory supervising, necessary is the faculty of English language enough to communicate with each other. Although the least faculty of Japanese language is necessary for living in Japan, the faculty of English faculty is essential for studying and researching on mathematical biology in our graduate school. The faculty of Japanese language is usually secondary for the study and the research in our graduate school. I could not accept any foreign regular student without the satisfactory faculty of English language, except for the case that he/she has the faculty of Japanese language enough to understand the scientific/technical literature written in Japanese. Once getting the research/regular studentship in our graduate school, it would be possible to have some courses of Japanese language and culture provided by our university in order to improve the faculty of Japanese language and the necessary knowledge to live in Japan. However, naturally I never accept any foreign student with the purpose only to improve his/her faculty of Japanese or English language.

  3. If you are planning to study in Japan with your private fund, please confirm your fund enough to maintain your student life in Japan. Japanese graduate school consists of two-year master course and three-year doctor course (= PhD course). For the master course, your fund must be satisfactory to keep your life and the tuition fees in Japan at least for two years. In the process of acceptance for the research/regular student, you would be necessarily required to submit some documents to prove the satisfactory fund. There may some chances only for the regular foreign student to get a scholarship/fellowship from our university or graduate school, though such a scholarship is just for the partial support for your student life. My research fund could not be used to support any part of student life.

  4. If you would want to get a scholarship for your advanced study in Japan, you may find one from the ministry or an organization of your own country, or may try to get one from a Japanese organization. As for the information about such scholarships, for instance, please check the following site:
